Pathan Dialogue screenwriter Abbas Tyrwala recently talked about Salman Khan's cameo in the film and how the writer and director strike a balance between Shah Rukh Khan and Salman.
Abbas said he went to the set on the day the two stars were filming together.
Abbas spoke of Patan and Tiger having to share screens. Shah Rukh and Salman exchanged a joke there. Both are given equal attention. It's a Shah Rukh movie, so you can't ignore it. Salman has a special entry, so you put it under Shah Rukh. It cannot be kept. Both have to get equal attention (on-screen) to give the audience something important," he told The Times of India.
He added: "They are both the reddest stars in the country, they all have their own eyes, and no matter how good friends they are when they appear on screen together, they know that each other is different. What lines is the guy saying, what lines am I saying if I say that... So, what happens if the actor wants to express his thoughts, he knows what he can do, he knows what he can do?
Abbas said stars like Salman sometimes have their own opinions about how to express their lines or whether they can change a joke,
but then it's up to writers and directors to convince him. Yes, if the joke does not belong to the world of cinema. Salman will say if I say my lines like that or tell jokes like that. Now I know it's an insider's joke that only people in the film industry will understand, and the audience probably won't. So he has to be sure that we don't break the joke of this industry," he said.
But the author admits that if a star makes up his mind, no matter what you write, he will say what he wants to say. "After a certain point, if a star like Shah Rukh or Salman is determined to say a certain conversation in a certain way, you can write or rewrite 50 drafts as he likes. They will say the same thing. Once you get to a certain point, you have to interact with them," he said.
Abbas acknowledged that films like Patan are "tools to celebrate Shah Rukh's fame" and that "films of this magnitude serve the fame of actors." Here, the film relies on Shah Rukh's star status, but in films like Chak De India or Swadas, it's more of a role-driven project, with actors sticking to the director's vision and script, he added.
